I have learned many things during the pandemic. Unfortunately, one thing that I learned about is mask acne. I thought that my acne days were decades ago, but the face masks of 2020 summoned the acne demons. I went through a rough patch, but am better now. Now that my skin has cleared up, I thought that I should share tips that I learned about mask acne. Plus, I teamed up with Crayola SchoolMaskPack to host a giveaway. One of our lucky readers will win brand new packages of my favorite Crayola SchoolMaskPack face masks in both adult and child sizes.
1. Wear masks with a flexible nose bridge to give some of your skin buffer room from the mask. I adjust mine so that it is slightly lifts some of the fabric away from part of my cheek that is easily irritated. I use masks from Crayola that have a flexible nose bridge. It's such a simple concept to help keep the mask from rubbing on your skin and makes a world of difference. These masks come in adult and child sizes.
2. Wash your masks daily in a fragrance-free laundry detergent. Personally, I use All Free & Clear Detergent which is fragrance free and meant for sensitive skin.
3. Change your mask every few of hours. The Crayola masks that I mentioned earlier come in 5-packs. They advertise them as a new mask for each weekday, but if you are struggling with mask acne, I recommend taking the entire 5-pack with you to work and rotating them throughout the day. The 5-pack comes with a little mesh laundry bag that is convenient to keep in your purse. Then you simply toss the bag of masks into the wash when you get home.
4. Make sure that your mask is not too tight. If your mask is too tight and rubs on your skin too much, it will cause irritation. Look for masks that have toggles for you to adjust your mask.
5. Avoid synthetic materials and possibly avoid masks with large thick logos irons onto them. For instance, some masks are pretty, but then the fabric is harsh on your skin.
6. Wash your face with gentle cleanser. I’ve used CeraVe Gentle Foaming Wash for several years. I think that gentle is key here if masks are irritating your skin.
7. Moisturize regularly. Avoid masks with fragrance. Personally, I use CeraVe AM Moisturizer and CeraVe PM Moisturizer because I have really dry skin. The CeraVe AM Moisturizer is a little too thick for my husband who has even more acne prone skin than me. He uses the lighter version - he uses the CeraVe Lighter Weight Face Lotion with Hyalaronic Acid and SPF 30 Protection. CeraVe is awesome – we’ve used these products for several years after a dermatologist recommended some of the CeraVe products to me. All of the CeraVe products that we use are fragrance-free. Plus, you can’t beat the grocery store pricing.
8. Don’t wear makeup or lip gloss under your mask.
9. Don’t reuse disposable masks. If you can’t wash them, then it’s not sanitary.
10. Use acne spot treatments as need. If you are wearing a mask, no one should notice, right? However, use it sparingly and avoid scented spot treatments.
11. Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is good for your skin.
12. Avoid scrubs and strong masks that may irritate your skin. Again, we want to minimize irritation.
I hope that these tips help! Hopefully, mask acne is a short lived experience and we will get to toss our masks soon once there is a COVID-19 vaccine.
Get Festive!
As mentioned earlier, my family uses the Crayola SchoolMaskPack face masks. They have a variety of fun designs that are great throughout the year for both adults and children. I love the colorful masks below that resemble crayon wrappers. My youngest son loves their cartoon crayon themed masks.
The Crayola SchoolMaskPack team also created Halloween face masks. These are awesome! Nothing says 2020 like Halloween face masks. The masks are fun and festive, but I also like that you will probably take photos on Halloween and the face masks will capture how we managed to still have fun in 2020!
